Edelweiss

acrylic, graphite, and oil on cradled birch panel
6x6"
$375

This painting was inspired by a friend's vintage pendant, a pressed edelweiss flower in a round double-sided glass locket. The flower grows at 6,000 to 10,000 ft rocky alpine elevations and was considered difficult to collect and, therefore, a token of deeply devoted love when presented to a loved one. "Edel" means noble and "weiss" means white and the genus name "Leontopodium" means lion's paw.

Although it sounds like a traditional folk song, the song "Edelweiss" was written by Rodgers & Hammerstein in 1959 for the Broadway musical, The Sound of Music.
